Description
The best of the yellow flowering varieties, Clematis tanguita, commonly called Yellow or Golden Clematis, is a late season bloomer featuring golden lantern-like buds that dance in the wind opening to 3 to 4 inch diameter sunshine yellow flowers over a long bloom period starting in mid summer and continuing into fall. With vines growing up to 15 feet high or long its an excellent climber or takes on the form of a sprawling shrub when grown in dry soils in sandy to gravelly areas. The vines are clad with pinnate to bipinnate medium green leaves that serve as a good backdrop to the flowers. No garden is complete without a climbing vine for some stunning visual interest and this yellow climber will surely do the trick!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 feet high or wide spreading along the ground, the Tangutica Yellow Clematis is excellent for growing on a trellis or fence or to spill over a wall. The vine does best when cut back to a foot above the ground every winter so it’s not the best choice for pergolas or other overhead structures. Well-suited to growing up a trellis or obelisk, and may be trained to scramble through trees. As a vertical structure for climbing or a horizontal expanse for meandering, this clematis is a glorious presence. A fine addition to Clematis gardens, yellow themed gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  6 feet apart for covering a fence or mass planting as a shrub-like groundcover.
Growing Preferences
Tangutica Yellow Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Clematis tend to like sun on their vines and shade on their roots to keep them cooler. So we always plant a groundcover or flowers around the base of the vine to meet this preference.

Note: All clematis prefer to be planted so that the crown of the plant, where its stem(s) emerge from the soil in which it was grown, is at least 3 to 4 inches below the soil level.

Clematis Pruning Group 3
Tangutica Yellow is in pruning group 3, which consists of late-flowering species that bloom from mid-summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season’s growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 1 or 2 feet above the ground. Always make sure to leave two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current seasons vines and blooms. Although on some varieties you will be removing some green stems and buds, this treatment keeps these vigorous growers in bounds. If not pruned, these vines will quickly become a mass of old diseased woody stems producing very few flowers.

We received a vigorous and healthy plant with no signs of wilting or damage from shipping. We planted the clematis Vine in an oversized hole and backfilled it with improved soil, kept up with recommended watering, and a few days later we saw new growth. We had a week of extra warm springtime weather here in Michigan and the plant has already doubled in size. The detailed plant information and care are very helpful for choosing the right plant for the intended location and knowing how to prune the plant. -very happy, thank you!—————————————————Wow! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
